About Life Insurance Learn

The short version

This is a plain-English education site about life insurance. We explain how it works and help you think it through. We don't sell insurance, we're not an agency, and we don't collect your personal information.

Why this site exists

Life insurance is one of the few products people buy without really understanding it. The explanations out there tend to be either sales pitches or so technical they're useless.

This site tries to sit in between: honest about the trade-offs, specific enough to be useful, and written so a person who has never bought a policy can follow it.

That means saying things a sales page won't. That most term policies never pay a death benefit, and that's the design working. That permanent insurance pays whoever sells it a large commission. That a policy you can't sustain and let lapse can leave you worse off than a simpler one you could afford.

Who reviews the content

Content on this site is drafted with AI assistance and reviewed by James Mills.

James is a retired financial planner. He held professional designations in Financial Planning, Life Insurance, and Estate Planning, and he is a former Florida life insurance agent. He was also formerly a Florida mortgage broker and real estate broker.

Those credentials are in the past tense on purpose. James is retired and does not hold an active insurance license. He does not sell insurance, does not represent any company, and cannot give you personal advice through this site.

What he brings is experience: he knows how these products are built, how they're sold, and where buyers get surprised. That's the perspective this site is written from.

How we work

Every fact, figure, and rule here traces to a primary source: state insurance departments, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, the IRS, the Social Security Administration, or an insurance company's own filed documents. If we can't verify something, we leave it out rather than guess.

Our full standards are in the editorial policy, and the sources we rely on are listed on the sources page.
